Spain thrashed Switzerland 3-1 to reach the Semi-Finals

Mdunge Skhumbuzo

Spain has defeated Switzerland 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out to advance in the Semi-Finals.

After an enthralling match that ended 1-1 at the Krestovsky stadium, Switzerland went to extra time with the one man down after Romo Freuler (a defensive midfielder) received a red card in the 77th minute.

In the semi-finals, Spain will face Italy, which also defeated Belgium to advance in the next round.

The Spanish coach, Luis Enrique, said he still believes they are one of the favorites teams who can win the trophy.

"I always said, we were one of the favorite teams who can win the trophy, but of course that is going to depend on our performance. Now, we're in the last four, and that is fantastic. It fills us with a great sense of pride." Luis said.

The Switzerland coach, Vladimir Petkovic, said the referee had 'spoiled' the match in the second half. "Yeah, first of all, congratulations to Spain because they tried everything and won in the penalties. I'm also very proud of my team and all the players. Unfortunately for me, a red card like this has affected our game for 45 minutes. All my players were the heroes of the night. I think we deserved to get to the semi-finals, but unfortunately, we were tired when we shot the penalties." Vladimir said.

On-head-to-head, Spain has lost one game to Switzerland in all competitions that had 23 features. The defeat happened in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where Spain lost the opening match, 1-0, and went all the way to lift the crown as Champions.
